The New Marina

An Ace Wasabi Blog

It feels like the Marina District of San Francisco has always been a vibrant, bustling neighborhood. But longtime residents remember a very different place and the history behind how it came into its current glory.

In the early '80s, the Marina District in San Francisco was perceived as dull, with its well-off residents living in large Victorian houses surrounded by lackluster, aging businesses. It was far from the vibrant and trendy neighborhood it is today. So, how did it reach its current status?

Following the destructive impact of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, the Marina District, situated on unstable sandy ground with a shallow water table, faced extensive damage and uncertainty about its future. However, against all odds, the Marina experienced a remarkable revitalization. Today, it has transformed into a hotspot for young and affluent crowds, earning a reputation as the most fashionable neighborhood in San Francisco, bustling with chic bars and acclaimed restaurants. This evolution was made achievable by the seismic upgrades carried out during the post-quake reconstruction, playing a crucial role in the neighborhood's resurgence and newfound allure.
